Importance of trees in the town
The Beverley and District Civic Society has always been aware of the importance of trees to the town, in fact in 1967 the first C.S Report on the Trees of Beverley was published, which itemised all the existing mature trees and led to tree preservation orders being placed on many of them. The photographs are thankfully very similar to how things are now in central Beverley, but there are some notable losses where the long standing woody residents have been replaced by concrete, the soft edges of a market town removed. (Manor Rd, Wylies Rd. Lairgate)
In 2021 we applied for an East Riding Community Grant of £5,000 to celebrate the 1300 thanniversary of St. John of Beverley. We worked on the basis of planting 1300 trees, andmanaged this by planting the Archery Field with Humber Forest, replacing trees on theWestwood with the Pasture Masters and gave away fruit trees for member’s gardens.
The following year, and this year with the help of grants from ERYC and Tesco’s, we haveworked with ERYC Forestry to plant trees in residential areas of the town to provide thelandscaping benefits that trees give to a neighbourhood. We hope these new additions will be appreciated and blossom for many years to come.
When the ground dries out, we have some oak trees (with stock proof fencing) to beplanted on Figham, along the old tree lines, which we are doing in partnership with thePasture Masters.
